Short answer
A floor plan is the view looking straight down at a room with the ceiling removed. It shows layout: where walls, doors, windows, cabinets and furniture sit, and how much space is left between them.
An elevation is the view looking straight at a wall, drawn flat and to scale. It shows heights and proportions: how tall the cabinets are, where the tile stops, how the hood relates to the upper cabinets, where the sconces land beside the mirror.
You need both. A floor plan proves the room works. An elevation proves it looks right. Almost every remodel regret — the awkward gap, the fixture in the wrong place, the proportion that feels off — would have been visible on an elevation, on paper, for free.

What does a floor plan show?
Imagine slicing the room horizontally about four feet off the floor, lifting the top off, and looking down. That is a floor plan. It shows:
- Wall positions and thicknesses, and where walls are being added or removed
- Door and window locations, and which way doors swing
- Fixed elements: cabinetry runs, islands, plumbing fixtures, fireplaces, stairs
- Furniture at true size, in the position it will actually occupy
- Dimensions, particularly clearances — walkways, work aisles, the gap between the table and the wall
The purpose of a floor plan is to answer functional questions. Can two people pass behind someone at the range? Does the refrigerator door clear the island? Is there room to pull a dining chair out and stand up? Where does the light from that window fall in the afternoon?
Furniture drawn at true size is the part homeowners find most useful, and it is the part most often skipped. A sofa that measures 96 inches is a very different object from one that measures 84, and the difference is invisible in a showroom and unmissable on a plan.
What does an elevation show?
An elevation is a wall, drawn flat, as if you were standing directly in front of it. No perspective, no foreshortening — everything at true relative size, so proportions can be judged and measured.
This is where a kitchen or bathroom is actually designed. An elevation shows:
- Cabinet heights, widths, and the relationship between upper and lower runs
- Door and drawer configuration — which openings are drawers, which are doors, how they are divided
- Where tile starts and stops, and how it meets the cabinetry, window casing and ceiling
- Hood height and its relationship to the cabinets on either side
- Open shelving, glass fronts, appliance panels, the toe kick, the crown
- In a bathroom: mirror size, sconce height, faucet centerline, niche position, bench height
- In a living room: mantel height, the built-ins flanking the fireplace, the television, the art
Elevations are also the document a millworker or cabinetmaker builds from. A verbal description of built-ins produces someone else's interpretation of built-ins. A drawn elevation produces yours.
How to read a drawing without training
You do not need to know every convention. Five things get you most of the way:
- Find the scale. Usually written as something like ½″ = 1′-0″, meaning half an inch on paper equals one foot in reality. Once you know the scale, you can measure anything on the drawing.
- Read the dimension strings. Lines with arrows at each end and a number in the middle. Check that the numbers along a wall add up to the wall's total length — if they do not, something is wrong.
- Look for the door swings. Drawn as a quarter-circle arc. Follow each arc and check what it hits.
- Find north, or find a window. Orientation tells you where the light comes from, which affects color choices more than most people expect.
- Locate yourself. Pick the doorway you normally enter by and trace your usual path through the room with a finger. Most layout problems announce themselves in that one exercise.
A trick worth the twenty minutes it takes: mark it out on the floor with painter's tape. Tape the island footprint, the new wall position, the sofa. Then live with it for a couple of days. Walking around a taped outline reveals things no drawing can, and it costs a roll of tape.
What drawings catch that renderings do not
Every item on this list is a genuine, common failure that an elevation catches for free:
- An upper cabinet run that collides with a window casing
- A hood that leaves a two-inch gap to the ceiling — too small to fill, too big to ignore
- A dishwasher door that cannot open because it hits the corner cabinet
- Sconces specified at a height that puts them behind the mirror's edge
- A backsplash that dies into a wall with no logical stopping point
- Built-ins that are not symmetrical about the fireplace, in a room where symmetry was the entire idea
- An island long enough for four stools but with knee space for three
- A pendant centered on the room rather than on the island it hangs over
- Outlets that land in the middle of a tile feature
- A toilet whose centerline gives 13 inches to the vanity instead of the 15-inch minimum
None of these are exotic. All of them are expensive after the fact and free on paper. This is why Chateau Concepts draws the plan and the elevations before anything is ordered, and it is the concrete reason a remodel without a design plan is a gamble.
Renderings, 3D and why they are not a substitute
3D renderings are genuinely useful. They communicate atmosphere, material and light in a way that a flat drawing cannot, and for many people they are the point at which the project finally becomes real.
But they are a presentation tool, not a construction document. A rendering is drawn in perspective, which means nothing in it can be measured reliably. It is also, by nature, flattering — lit beautifully, styled carefully, and often quietly simplified where the real detail is awkward. A rendering will happily show you a room whose dimensions do not work.
The sensible arrangement is both: elevations to get it right, renderings to see it. If you are shown only renderings, ask for the elevations. If a firm does not produce them, that tells you where the detail decisions will be made — on site, by whoever is holding the tile saw.
How to review your own drawings
You are the only person on the project who knows how you actually live. Review the drawings with that in mind, and be genuinely difficult about it — this is the cheapest moment in the entire project to change something.
- Walk your routine. Groceries from car to refrigerator. Coffee at 6am. Unloading the dishwasher. Getting ready in the morning with someone else in the room. Trace each one on the plan.
- Check where everything lives. Point at the plan and say where the trash goes, where the mixer lives, where the towels are stored, where the mail lands. Anything you cannot answer is a gap.
- Question every dimension under 36 inches. Narrow passages are where daily irritation accumulates.
- Check the elevations against your own height if you are notably tall or short. Standard heights are standard for someone; they may not be standard for you.
- Look at what is not drawn. Where does the vacuum go? Where does the television live and where do its cables run? Where is the thermostat now that the wall has moved?
- Say what you dislike, plainly. Designers would far rather hear it now than at installation. A drawing you are quietly unsure about is a room you will be loudly unsure about.
