Paneling, ceilings and trim that look original

Millwork is the difference between a room that has been decorated and a room that has been designed. It is also the easiest thing to get proportionally wrong, because the rules are invisible until they are broken.

Short answer

Height is the decision that matters most. Wainscot at roughly one third of the wall height reads correctly; at exactly half it looks accidental. Board and batten runs taller, typically 48 to 60 inches.

Scale trim to the ceiling. An 8-foot ceiling takes a modest crown; a 10-foot ceiling needs a substantially larger profile or the room reads unfinished. The same molding in both rooms will be wrong in one of them.

Match the existing profiles in an older house. The reason new millwork announces itself is almost always a profile that does not match what is already there, not the fact that it is new.

What does millwork actually do?

Beyond appearance, it does three practical things:

It also does something less tangible: it signals that a room was considered. A plainly furnished room with well-proportioned trim reads as more finished than an expensively furnished room without it.

One rule prevents most mistakes: one wall treatment per room, and not in every room. A house where every wall is paneled is exhausting. Choose the rooms that earn it — the entry, the dining room, one study — and leave the rest plain.

Two proportional rules do most of the work. Never place a horizontal line at exactly half the wall height — the eye reads equal halves as indecision. And align new lines with what already exists: a window sill, a door casing head, a stair rail. A wainscot cap that lands 2 inches below the window sill looks like an error; one that meets it looks intentional.

Rather than buying one large stock molding, build the crown up from two or three simpler profiles — it reads better, looks more period-appropriate and lets you tune the overall size to the room.
Should new trim match the old trim in an older house?
Yes, and this is the single step that determines whether new millwork looks original or announces itself. Take a section of the existing casing or base to a millwork shop and have the profile matched, rather than choosing the closest stock item. The mismatch people notice in renovated older houses is almost never that the work is new — it is that the profile is subtly different from the room next door.
Is MDF acceptable for paneling?
For painted work, it is often the better choice. MDF is dimensionally stable, has no grain to telegraph through paint, and takes a sprayed finish beautifully on large flat areas. Use solid wood where the grain will be visible under a stain, and where moisture is a real risk — a mudroom bench or a bathroom — because MDF does not recover from getting wet.
Can I add beams to a ceiling that does not have them?
Yes. Applied beams are hollow boxes fixed to the ceiling and they are entirely convincing when the proportions and spacing suit the room rather than following a standard interval. Two cautions: coordinate with the lighting before the electrical is roughed in, or you will end up with a downlight in the middle of a beam; and check the ceiling height, since coffers in particular need about 9 feet to avoid closing a room in.
