Short answer
Put blocking in the walls now. Plywood behind the tile at the shower, beside the toilet and at the tub costs almost nothing during construction and means a grab bar can be fitted anywhere later, in an afternoon, without opening a wall.
Build the shower curbless. It is easier to clean, safer for everyone, looks better, and it removes the single most common trip point in a house. It is a framing and drainage decision made at the start.
Nothing here has to look medical. Comfort-height toilets, a bench, a handheld shower and good light are all things people want anyway.

What has to be decided while the walls are open?
The economics here are unusually clear. Almost every item on this list is inexpensive during a remodel and expensive or impossible afterwards.

Blocking is the highest-value item on the list by a wide margin. A sheet of plywood behind the tile in three locations means that whenever a grab bar is needed — after surgery, for a visiting parent, in twenty years — it can be fitted properly into solid backing rather than into hollow board with anchors that will not hold a falling adult.
Is a curbless shower worth building?
A curbless shower has no lip to step over. It requires the shower floor to be lower than the surrounding floor, which is achieved either by recessing the framing or by building up the rest of the bathroom floor.
- Linear drain at the back or at the entry is the usual solution, because it allows the floor to slope in one direction only, which large-format tile can follow.
- Slope is specified, not eyeballed. Roughly a quarter inch per foot toward the drain is the conventional figure — confirm with the waterproofing system being used.
- Waterproofing extends beyond the shower. With no curb, the wet area is larger than the enclosure, and the membrane has to reflect that.
- A glass panel rather than a door keeps the opening clear. It also removes the door swing from a tight plan.
- Check the floor structure early. On a slab, recessing means cutting; on a framed floor, it means joist work. Either way it is a first-week decision, not a finishing one.

Blocking, a curbless pan, a wider door and one extra outlet add very little to a bathroom being rebuilt anyway — and they are what decides whether the house still works in twenty years.

Grab bars that do not look like grab bars
The clinical appearance people fear comes from institutional stainless bars added afterwards. Planned properly, support is invisible:
- Match the finish to the rest of the fittings. Grab bars are made in the same finishes as faucets and towel bars, and one in matching brass or nickel reads as hardware.
- Dual-purpose fittings. Towel bars and shower shelves rated as grab bars exist, and they look like what they are named after.
- A shower bench is a support item that nobody reads as one. Build it in, 17 to 19 inches high.
- A handheld shower on a slide bar is useful for cleaning, for washing a child, and for anyone who needs to sit. It is a standard fitting, not an adaptation.
- Position matters more than quantity. Beside the toilet, at the shower entry, and on the shower wall within reach of the bench. Blocking in those three places covers nearly everything.
- Anchor into blocking, never into tile alone. A bar fixed into board with hollow anchors will fail exactly when it is needed.

The shower valve position is a small detail with a large effect: placing it near the entry rather than directly under the head means the water can be turned on and adjusted without standing in a cold spray. It costs nothing and everyone benefits.
Lighting, and why it matters more with age
Older eyes need substantially more light to see the same detail, and they are considerably more sensitive to glare. Both facts point the same way:
- More light, more evenly distributed, rather than one bright source. Layers, as everywhere — see the lighting design guide.
- Sconces beside the mirror, which light a face without the glare of a bare downlight.
- A light in the shower, rated for the location. A dark shower is a hazard.
- Night lighting. A low-level light on a motion sensor, or a dimmed toe-kick strip, so a bathroom used at 3 a.m. does not require a full-brightness switch.
- High CRI at 2700K, so skin and color read correctly at the mirror.
- Contrast at edges. A floor and wall that read as different surfaces, and a visible edge on any level change, helps far more than people expect.
Beyond the bathroom
Two decisions outside the bathroom carry most of the remaining benefit:
- A bedroom and full bathroom on the ground floor. This is the single most consequential aging-in-place decision in a two-story house, and it is a plan question rather than a fittings question. In many Dallas houses it means converting a study or a formal dining room — which is worth considering as part of whole-home phasing.
